2016 Christmas Portraits

I can't believe we are in the last couple weeks of December already... And I haven't blogged in over 2 months (New Years Resolution: Blog more)!

I have been super busy photographing and editing all your Christmas portraits over the past 2 months, but it's safe to say I am done with Christmas photos until next year! I want to say thank you to everyone who booked a Christmas mini or full Christmas session with us. I had a so much fun meeting many new families this season, as well as seeing some familiar faces again.

It's so special to me that you allow us to capture these important memories for you, and that you are sharing them with your loved ones. I truly love what I do, and am so grateful to have such amazing clients that give me the opportunity to follow my dream.

After an intense couple months I am officially on vacation from December 23rd - January 3rd. I will still be checking e-mails and will get back to you as soon as possible, but expect a delay in response until I am fully back at it for 2017! Have a wonderful Christmas everyone!

Baby + Toddler Workshop - Vancouver Photographer

This past Saturday I put on my first workshop with Vancouver Active Moms & Moms To Be for parents who wanted to learn how to take better photos of their baby's and toddlers! It was a great turn out and a lot of fun.

I went over my favourite tips and tricks for getting your toddlers to stay still and engage with your cameras and the best ways to photograph and safely pose your newborns and babies. I also shared some lighting, clothing and background tips to really take your photos to the next level!

If you have an idea for future workshops, I would love to hear it! Send me and e-mail at darlingdaysphoto.com

Here is some of the portraits and behind the scenes from this weekend's workshop!

Madison's Birth Story - Vancouver Birth Photographer

Madison’s Birth Story

I had the pleasure of documenting Madison's Birth Story last month. It was such a fun, exciting and inspiring moment to be a part of and what better way of to hear her story, than from her Mother; Katharine.

Here is Madison's Birth Story:

It was the morning after Ty, my oldest became a teenager, and I was preparing for a small birthday/sleepover party for him with a few close friends when my water broke. I immediately called my mother, my doula Raman - from The Divine Child Doula Services, my birth photographer Jenn & my Doctor (in that order) and began to prepare for the upcoming birth of my daughter, which included unravelling of Ty’s party plans. Around 5 pm my labour still really hadn’t began so I sent a message to Raman to say I may need you sooner than later to help me get things started (as I did not want to be induced with this birth), and I failed at trying to have a nap.

By 7 pm Jenn  came around to start documenting what was the beginning of my labour and shortly after Raman (my doula) showed up to help kick start this labour. Soon it was my youngest son Owen’s bedtime and Matt started his bedtime routine while Raman, Jenn and I went for a walk around the neighbourhood to continue the progression of the labour. It was wonderful to have these two with me so that Matt could focus on our son without having to worry about me, and I felt my family was taken care of, so I could focus on this labour. When we got back from our walk Owen was in bed and my mother came over to stay with the boys & Piper(Golden Doodle). As the contraction length started to increase we decided to head to the hospital with my newly formed entourage in tow. I was pleasantly surprised how relaxed and accommodating the nurses were when we came in with everyone. Our Doctor (from Group 2 of the Birth Docs Group) measured me and found out I was only 2cm dilated, but after explaining the progression of my first two births she told me to go for an hour walk and come back. So we left the intake area and walked around outside. Looking back now, we must have been a site - we we’re catching pokemon - squatting - swaying - swearing (mostly just me doing that) all things that helped me.  Luckily I had my doula telling me what to do, and I listened to her - because if it was coming out of Matt’s mouth I wouldn’t have. After a round outside and a couple more walks through the empty hallways of Women’s I was ready to be checked again.  I was at 4 cm and was ready to be admitted.  I asked to be directly put into my pool (or poo-la as my 2.5 year old says)! I hated that they made me walk up there but once I got in the room I did not care - I immediately stripped down and warmed by sore body in the water.

At midnight, I was beginning to feel immense pain radiating down my legs so I asked to be checked one more time, with the thought in my head that if I was 6 cm or under I would get the epidural but if I was 7 cm or over I would just have to grin & bare it - literally. Well Kate (the Doctor) told me I was 6 cm almost 7 cm - that didn’t help so I asked for the drugs. The blessing in disguise was the nurse wasn’t able to get the IV in right away so she went off to find another nurse.  I had the gas thrown into me and I tired to ride the wave of this 3rd stage of labour, and although they did get the IV in me - it was too late - I was ready to push. 3 contractions/pushes later Madison was out, and luckily Kate got down there in time because she didn’t believe me at first when I told her she was coming out :)

I have to say even though this was my 3rd birth it was an amazing experience because of the people I had around me including our Doula (which I now HIGHLY recommend especially for parents that have more that one child already at home), Jenn - (again I never thought I would have enjoyed birth photography but now seeing these pictures I cannot believe I missed out on my first two). Jenn was amazing at all points of my birth process, even the nurses loved her, and now I get to send a special memory not only to our family but also to our birth Doctor Kate - who I found out after that this was her first year out of residency and Madison was not only her 1st birth as the Primary Doctor but also her first water birth!

I am also thankful to share this special time with you as well as my Vancouver Active Moms & Moms to Be community and look forward to see more Birth Stories from Jenn!

Much Love,

Katharine

Fall Mini Sessions - Port Coquitlam Photographer

It's only summer, but Fall is quickly approaching. Soon we will say hello to pumpkin pies, leaves on the ground, chai lattes and crisp cool air.

Fall is the perfect time to update those family portraits or get some new ones of your children, as we all know how quickly they grow up and how we wish they can just stop for 2 seconds!

These mini sessions are open to the entire family or just your children. They will take place at a beautiful location in Pitt Meadows with trees, an open field and a gorgeous view of the Fraser River. To add some magic to your portraits we decided to incorporate a fire fly theme! Your kids will love pretending their catching flireflys and it will make for a unique and beautiful memory.

The sessions are 30 minutes and include 5 high-res digital images and a mini brag book. What is a brag book? They are the cutest mini album you will ever see! Leather cover on an accordion style album, with your best 12 images. Perfect for keeping in your purse to show off your adorable children or a great gift for grandparents.

30th Cake Smash, Port Coquitlam Photographer

One year olds aren't the only ones that should be celebrated! Seriously, how much fun is this?! This session was so exciting to design and create, and even more fun capturing.

One of my favourite parts of my job is being able to design the set. Whether it be for a newborn session or a creative session like this. I get to work with such talented local businesses that I love supporting and who make beautiful products that help my vision become a reality!

This defiantly deserves to be put into one of our little brag books and I will be ordering one as a sample for my studio, for sure!

And check out the talented women who supplied the props!!

Full Service Photography - Tri-cities, Vancouver Photographer.

It's been a busy spring -- all about the Mom's and the Mom's-to-be. Thanks to everyone who booked their Mother's Day and Family photos with us this April and May!
What I particularity loved about our Mom's Mini sessions is that we provided our clients with their own professional quality print! There's something I find extra special about being able to send home a physical photograph as opposed to just sharing digital files that may or may not even end up getting printed. Living in the digital era, I understand the need for having a digital copy of your portraits. But it's so much nicer to ALSO be able to sit down with my clients and plan out exactly what they want the images for and how they'll use them in their home. I love helping people to size what they need, figure out the type of print or album they like, and choose the colors and fabric they want. And then knowing that they can sit back and relax until I deliver the prints directly AND install them in the exactly right place in the home. It's magical!

I love being able to provide a full photography service that brings a little bit more love and beauty to people's home.

What do you think about adding prints and/or print credits to your sessions? What questions do you have about print photographs? Please leave a comment with your thoughts.

Preview of last week's maternity session! How gorgeous is this couple?! I can't wait to see how adorable their baby boy will be in a few weeks.

How to prepare for your newborn session

I hope everyone is having a great week so far and adjusting to the time change... thank goodness for caffeine, eh?!

Darling Days has a super busy week this week and I'm so excited to meet all of our new clients. We have a couple newborns coming in, we're finishing up the last of our Easter Mini's and we have maternity session to finish off the week. I will be posting lots of sneak peaks on our Facebook page, so stay tuned! www.facebook.com/darlingdaysphoto

I have lots of clients ask what they should do to prepare for their newborn session, so I thought I would share some tips that I find very helpful in creating a relaxed, sleepy baby:
- Keep baby up for 1 - 2 hours before the session (baths help!)
- Feed baby right before you leave or when you get to the studio (do not try to over feed, as this can make their tummy's upset)
- Bring bottles and soothers with you (if you use them). These help when we are transitioning baby or trying to get them to sleep in one of the set ups.
- Bring baby in (zipper) onsie and loose diaper. We want to disturb them as little as possible, when we need to get them undressed.
- And don't stress, sometimes babies just refuse to sleep. And in that case, we will still get some adorable shots!

PS. Sneak peak of baby Jack from yesterday's session. Look at those beautiful eyes!? <3

Welcome to Darling Days Photography!

Hello, thanks for checking out Darling Days Photography's first blog post! This blog is going to be a fun, creative outlet to let you all know what I’ve been up to and what I am planning for future sessions. I will be sharing special sneak peeks at my mini sets, I will be posting behind the scenes and out-takes from previous sessions that might not have made my portfolio, but are too cute or funny not to share, and of course lots of adorable squishy babies. <3

So, what have I been up to in February?

I’ve started offering maternity sessions, which I have loved capturing! I know how hard it can be to feel beautiful and “glowing” in the last few weeks of your pregnancy but believe me, you all look fantastic and I love being able to show my clients just that! I think every single pregnant woman is gorgeous and deserves to have a special keep sake to remember the beautiful belly they once had!

For those of you who have already been to my home studio; although cute, it was very small. Just a spare room upstairs, but I made it work. One morning I decided to lug my photography equipment downstairs to try out a family session, and it made all the difference. More room for children to run around and I can fit adult sized people in all the shots! Yay, success! I told hubby the situation and to my surprise he happily suggested moving my daughter’s playroom upstairs and my studio downstairs. So we did it! I am much happier with the space. I can now offer IN STUDIO family and maternity sessions.

Lastly, besides shooting some adorable newborns this month, I have been busy working with my designer on my website. I am so excited that it is live and couldn’t be happier with how it turned out. Through the website Darling Days Photography is able to accept all major credit cards, we can offer you your own private gallery to view over 30+ images to choose from and you get to see more of my work and learn a bit more about myself!

Thanks and I look forward to an exciting year spent working with lots of families, newborns and children!

- Jenn
